Special Agent (SA) Matthew Joseph Kuglics graduated from Green High School, Green, Ohio in 2000, and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in August of that same year.

Kuglics began his Air Force career as a Satellite and Wideband Communications Apprentice at Mountain Home Air Force Base, Idaho. In June 2004, he graduated from the United States Air Force Special Investigations Academy at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC), Brunswick, Georgia with a follow-on assignment to Detachment 101, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. During his time there, SA Kuglics completed and was awarded two Community College of the Air Force Associate of Science Degrees; the first in Electronic Systems Technology in 2005, and the last in Police Science in 2006. In November 2006, Kuglics was reassigned to the Anti-Terrorism Specialty Team, Detachment 352 at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas.

SA Kuglics volunteered for a second temporary tour of duty in the Middle East, and was assigned to the Air Force Office of Special Investigations’ Expeditionary Detachment (EDET) 2410, Kirkuk Regional Air Base, Iraq.

On 5 June 2007, Kuglics was in a convoy returning to Kirkuk Regional Air Base. Approximately two miles south of the base, an improvised explosive device detonated adjacent to the convoy, instantly killing him. SA Kuglics was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star; the Combat Action Medal; the Iraq Campaign Medal; the Air Force Commendation Medal (AFCM), 1st Oak Leaf Cluster (OLC), approved from his previous deployment ending in October 2006; and the AFCM, 2nd OLC for his Kirkuk End of Tour.
