Staff Sgt. Matthew J. West, 36, of Conover, Wisconsin, died August 30, 2010, in the Arghandab River Valley, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. Staff Sgt. West was assigned to the 71st Explosive Ordnance Disposal Group, Fort Carson, Colorado.
